Rehabilitation of Sussex County Bridge C-18 Roseville Road Byram Township

Rehabilitation of Bridge C-18
Roseville Road over Wolf Lake Inlet
Byram Township

A construction contract for the Bridge C-18 rehabilitation project was awarded to Sparwick Contracting of Lafayette, NJ, at the August 14, 2019 Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting. The completion date for the project is November 30, 2020 and the contractor is expecting a Spring 2020 start date for construction, with a four month construction period. Roseville Road will remain open to traffic during construction with a single lane flagging operation implemented as needed. See the attached public notice for more information regarding the project. Updates on the project progress will be provided throughout construction.


(8/14/2019) Project Update Notice: 2019 Crack Sealing

Please find attached the Project Update Notice for the 2019 Sussex County Crack Sealing Program. Work is underway and will continue on remaining roads as weather and staffing permit. The complete list of programmed routes is included in the notice. All work is expected to advance under a mobile single lane closure.


(8/2/2019) Construction Activity CR 605 & Green Apple Rd. Sparta Township

Please be advised of construction activity and a potential single lane, flagger controlled work zone along CR 605 in the vicinity of Green Apple Road in Sparta Twp., during work hours, to facilitate drainage system repair work. The construction activity is expected to begin on August 5, 2019. Please see the attached Public Notice for additional information.


(8/2/2019) 2019 Sussex County Striping Program: Project Startup Notice

Please find attached the Project Startup Notice for the 2019 Sussex County Striping Program. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin on or about Wednesday August 7, 2019. The anticipated County Route segments in the striping queue are included in the attached notice. An effort will be made to work from the northern part of the County southbound. All work is expected to advance under a mobile single lane closure.

Project Update Notice: 2019 Sussex County Resurfacing Program

The County of Sussex has awarded a contract in the amount of $8,963,204.33 to Schifano Construction Corp. for the subject project at the July 24, 2019 Board of Chosen Freeholders Meeting. Please find attached the most current public update notice with additional information regarding the project. Additional updates will be distributed when the Pre-construction Meeting has been scheduled.


(7/24/2019) Project Update Notice - Repair of Sussex County Bridge K-01 Hopatcong Borough

Please be advised that on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at approximately 2:30 p.m., a lane shift and work zone speed limit reduction will be in effect along CR 602 (Brooklyn-Stanhope Rd.) in the vicinity of Frances Avenue, in Hopatcong Borough, to facilitate repairs to Bridge K-01. Please note that the lane shift is being installed this week with concrete barrier to follow next week after traffic has had a chance to become accustomed to the new traffic pattern. Please see the attached Public Notice for additional information.

Attached you will find both the Division of Public Works and the Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety's 2019 Final Spring - Seasonal Reports.

The Division of Public Works Spring 2019 Seasonal Report highlights some of the tasks the Division's dedicated and skillful staff focused on while they worked to keep the 620 lane miles of County roadways open and safe. The Division will continue to be focused on these tasks for the remainder of the "season".

The Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety's Spring 2019 Seasonal Report highlights some of the tasks the Office's dedicated staff were focused on over the past few months, while keeping the County's 449 bridge, 14,000 signs, 1,700 pavement markings and 38 electrified signals operational and safe.

(6/18/2019) Construction Notice Repair of Sussex County Bridge D-11 Frankford Twp

Please be advised that on or about Monday, June 24, 2019, the Westbound Lane of CR 630 (Union Turnpike), in Frankford Township, will be closed to facilitate repairs to Bridge D-11. Traffic flow through the area will be controlled via temporary traffic signals to maintain a two-way, single-lane work zone during the repair work. (6/18/2019) Rehabilitation of Sussex County Bridge C-09 Project Status Update

Final design is in progress for the rehabilitation of Sussex County bridge C-09. Public Bidding will take place in Spring 2020, followed by construction in Fall 2020. For additional information regarding the project, see the attached public notice.


(6/14/2019) Reconstruction & Realignment of Sussex County Bridge X-09 Project Status Update

Bridge X-09, County Route 565 over Papakating Creek, Wantage Township

Construction of Bridge X-09 was completed and County Route 565 re-opened to traffic today, Friday, June 14, 2019. A ribbon cutting ceremony opening the new bridge was held at 10 a.m., officiated by Deputy Freeholder Director Sylvia Petillo. The final project notice is attached.

(5/31/2019) Emergency Closure - Eastbound Lane - CR-614 (Paulinskill Lake Road) - Fredon

Traffic Advisory – Eastbound Lane Closure

Please be advised that as of today, Friday, May 31, 2019 a section of the Eastbound lane of CR-614 (Paulinskill Lake Road) has been closed in Fredon Township as a result of the failure of the adjacent roadway embankment. Traffic flow through the area is being controlled via temporary traffic signals to maintain a two-way, single-lane work zone.
The eastbound lane will remain closed until embankment repair / stabilization measures can be designed and constructed.
Attached you will find a more detailed public notice and location map. Additional information and status updates will be disseminated as information becomes available.


(5/30/2019) Construction Activity CR 620 (Main Street) Sparta Township

Please be advised that the drainage system repair work along the eastbound shoulder of CR 620 (98 Main Street), has been completed. Please see the attached Public Notice for additional information.


(4/26/2019) Project Update Bridge D-21 Armstrong Rd Frankford

On or about April 29, 2019, the substructure (concrete) repair work will resume at Bridge D-21. Armstrong Road is anticipated to remain open during the proposed construction activities. Please find the attached Project Update Notice for additional information.


(2/20/2019) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 Main Street Sparta Township Bridge Q-06, Main Street over Wallkill River

Sussex County applies to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for two 2019 Local Aid Infrastructure Fund (LAIF) discretionary grants. If approved, these LAIF grants will provide up to $800,000 towards the replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 carrying Main Street over the Wallkill River in Sparta Township and up to $250,000 towards the replacement Sussex County Signal SC-36 at the intersection of County Route 607 (aka River Styx Road), Crescent Road, and Lakeside Boulevard in Hopatcong Borough. Please see attached for a public notice regarding the reduction of weight posting of Sussex County Bridge X-54 on Oil City Road in Wantage Township. Installation of revised bridge weight limit signs is scheduled to begin on or about Wednesday, March 14, 2018.

(11/21/2017) Bridge X-20 Closed - Wantage Township Carrying Berry Road over a Tributary of the West Branch of the Papakating Creek. Damage sustained during the storms of 2011 and subsequent storm events (Hurricane Sandy and other significant flows) have resulted in continued deterioration of the masonry substructure and roadway embankments at Bridge X-20. In the interest of public safety Bridge X-20 has been closed pending construction of a full bridge replacement.


(12/04/2015) Bridge S-25, CR-622 (Newton-Swartswood Rd) Weight Posting Reduction Please see attached for a public notice regarding the pending reduction of weight posting of Sussex County Bridge S-25 on CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in the Swartswood section of Stillwater. Installation of revised bridge weight limit signs will commence as soon as sign fabrication is complete and all utility markouts have cleared. These details have been developed by the Sussex County Division of Engineering to augment, and as appropriate replace, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Standard Construction Details.

Provide rules, regulations, and standards for site plans and subdivisions and procedures for review of site plans and subdivisions within the County's jurisdiction.

The Sussex County Division of Engineering is charged with overseeing the numerous facets associated with maintaining, improving, and monitoring the County's Transportation network. The Division works closely with the Division of Facilities Management providing project support and civil/survey design services for a variety of facility related capital improvement projects. Additionally, the Division of Engineering provides technical support to the Division of Planning.

Included within the Department's responsibilities are tasks such as in-house design of road and bridge improvement projects, management of multimillion dollar design projects, monitoring the condition of bridges; signals; signs; traffic markings and other similar infrastructure items, developing long term capital budgets, construction stakeout, ROW surveys, management of county road and bridge construction projects, track traffic trends, and monitor work within the county right of way through road opening and driveway permits.
