(6/14/2019) 2019 Crack Sealing Project Start-Up Notice

Please find attached the Project Startup Notice for the 2019 Sussex County Crack Sealing Program. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin on Monday June 17th, 2019 at 7 a.m. The complete list of programmed routes is included in the notice. All work is expected to advance under a mobile single lane closure.


(6/14/2019) Reconstruction & Realignment of Sussex County Bridge X-09 Project Status Update

Bridge X-09, County Route 565 over Papakating Creek, Wantage Township

Construction of Bridge X-09 was completed and County Route 565 re-opened to traffic today, Friday, June 14, 2019. A ribbon cutting ceremony opening the new bridge was held at 10 a.m., officiated by Deputy Freeholder Director Sylvia Petillo. The final project notice is attached.

(5/31/2019) Emergency Closure - Eastbound Lane - CR-614 (Paulinskill Lake Road) - Fredon

Traffic Advisory – Eastbound Lane Closure

Please be advised that as of today, Friday, May 31, 2019 a section of the Eastbound lane of CR-614 (Paulinskill Lake Road) has been closed in Fredon Township as a result of the failure of the adjacent roadway embankment. Traffic flow through the area is being controlled via temporary traffic signals to maintain a two-way, single-lane work zone.
The eastbound lane will remain closed until embankment repair / stabilization measures can be designed and constructed.
Attached you will find a more detailed public notice and location map. Additional information and status updates will be disseminated as information becomes available.

Attached you will find both the Division of Public Works and the Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety's 2019 Spring - Seasonal Reports.

The Division of Public Works Spring 2019 Seasonal Report highlights some of the tasks the Division's dedicated and skillful staff focused on while they worked to keep the 620 lane miles of County roadways open and safe. The Division will continue to be focused on these tasks for the remainder of the "season".

The Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety's Spring 2019 Seasonal Report highlights some of the tasks the Office's dedicated staff were focused on over the past few months, while keeping the County's 449 bridge, 14,000 signs, 1,700 pavement markings and 38 electrified signals operational and safe.

On or about April 29, 2019, the substructure (concrete) repair work will resume at Bridge D-21. Armstrong Road is anticipated to remain open during the proposed construction activities. Please find the attached Project Update Notice for additional information.

Rehabilitation of Sussex County Bridge C-18 Roseville Road Byram Township

Rehabilitation of Bridge C-18

Bridge C-18 is a two cell, reinforced concrete box culvert and is rated in poor condition due to the condition of the culvert, which exhibits concrete spalling and exposed rusted reinforcing steel throughout. Genesis Engineering, the County's design consultant for the project, has progressed the design plans for the rehabilitation of Bridge C-18 to 90%. The proposed work consists of concrete repairs to the culvert interior, reconstruction of the culvert headwalls and installation of 4-bar bridge railing. A grant for the project, in the amount of $470,000.00, was authorized and is funded from the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund Authority Act. Award of a construction contract is expected to be made in September 2019. The roadway will remain open to traffic during construction, with a single lane flagging operation implemented as needed. (2/20/2019) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 Main Street Sparta Township Bridge Q-06, Main Street over Wallkill River

Sussex County applies to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for two 2019 Local Aid Infrastructure Fund (LAIF) discretionary grants. If approved, these LAIF grants will provide up to $800,000 towards the replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 carrying Main Street over the Wallkill River in Sparta Township and up to $250,000 towards the replacement Sussex County Signal SC-36 at the intersection of County Route 607 (aka River Styx Road), Crescent Road, and Lakeside Boulevard in Hopatcong Borough. (11/21/2017) Bridge X-20 Closed - Wantage Township Carrying Berry Road over a Tributary of the West Branch of the Papakating Creek. Damage sustained during the storms of 2011 and subsequent storm events (Hurricane Sandy and other significant flows) have resulted in continued deterioration of the masonry substructure and roadway embankments at Bridge X-20. In the interest of public safety Bridge X-20 has been closed pending construction of a full bridge replacement.


(12/04/2015) Bridge S-25, CR-622 (Newton-Swartswood Rd) Weight Posting Reduction Please see attached for a public notice regarding the pending reduction of weight posting of Sussex County Bridge S-25 on CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in the Swartswood section of Stillwater. Installation of revised bridge weight limit signs will commence as soon as sign fabrication is complete and all utility markouts have cleared. Please be advised that on or about Monday, November 9, 2015, Bridge B-10 in the Borough of Branchville will be weight posted at 4 tons and opened to weight restricted traffic. Please see the attached public notice for additional information regarding this weight posting.

These details have been developed by the Sussex County Division of Engineering to augment, and as appropriate replace, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Standard Construction Details.

Provide rules, regulations, and standards for site plans and subdivisions and procedures for review of site plans and subdivisions within the County's jurisdiction.

The Sussex County Division of Engineering is charged with overseeing the numerous facets associated with maintaining, improving, and monitoring the County's Transportation network. The Division works closely with the Division of Facilities Management providing project support and civil/survey design services for a variety of facility related capital improvement projects. Additionally, the Division of Engineering provides technical support to the Division of Planning.

Included within the Department's responsibilities are tasks such as in-house design of road and bridge improvement projects, management of multimillion dollar design projects, monitoring the condition of bridges; signals; signs; traffic markings and other similar infrastructure items, developing long term capital budgets, construction stakeout, ROW surveys, management of county road and bridge construction projects, track traffic trends, and monitor work within the county right of way through road opening and driveway permits.
