(5/16/2023) Construction Notice: Bridge L-09 Replacement

Please be advised that Warbasse Junction Road at Sussex County Bridge L-04 has been opened to traffic as of today. The contractor, Sparwick Contracting, has reached substantial completion on the bridge replacement project. Some minor punchlist and cleanup items will be taken care of over the next couple weeks to reach final completion. For more information, please see the notice attached.


(5/5/2023) Project Notice: Bridge L-09 Repair

Please be advised that construction is anticipated to begin on or about Tuesday, May 9th for stone masonry repairs of Bridge L-09 on Van Sickle Road in Lafayette Township. Traffic will be controlled through the work zone with a daily, self-yielding single lane closure, which will be reopened at the end of each work day. Construction is anticipated to last 3-4 weeks. (4/26/2023) Construction Update: Bridge Q-06 Replacement

Please be advised that the watermain relocation work commenced on March 27, 2023 and, due to delays experienced during installation of the by-pass piping, the original completion date of April 30, 2023 has been revised to May 5, 2023. The May 5th completion date is subject to change due to adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. For more information, please see the attached public notice.


(3/30/2023) Construction Update: Bridge L-04 Replacement

Please be advised that construction is progressing well for the replacement of Sussex County Bridge L-04. The contractor has completed all of the concrete pouring work and is now working towards surface finish treatments, minor storm sewer improvements, and preparing for final paving and guiderail installation. Bridge L-04 will remain closed for the duration of construction. County Route 663 (Warbasse Junction Road) will remain open to local traffic only, and a posted detour route will be in effect for through traffic until the project is substantially complete. (1/6/2023) Traffic Advisory: CR 620 (Glen Road) Geotechnical Investigation

Please be advised that a single lane closure will be established along CR 620 (Glen Road) in Sparta Township, between Main Street and E. Mountain Road, for the purpose of obtaining soil borings along the westbound shoulder of CR 620. A flagger controlled work zone will be established to maintain eastbound and westbound traffic, alternately, in the eastbound lane. The single lane closure will be implemented on Tuesday, 1/10/23 and Wednesday, 1/11/23, from approximately 7 am to 5 pm. The schedule is subject to change based on weather or other unforeseen circumstances. For more information, please see the attached public notice.


(12/13/2022) NJDOT US Route 206 Rockfall Mitigation – Andover Twp & Town of Newton

This Project responds to potential operational safety concerns associated with the rock embankments adjacent to the roadway. Recommended rockfall mitigation methods generally include creating stable rock slopes through mechanical removal of loose rock and/or use of controlled presplit-and-blasted removal methods. No detours are anticipated. For safety purposes, temporary traffic stoppages are planned only when necessary to protect the safety of the roadway users.

(12/6/2022) Public Notice: Road Closure CR 517, Andover Boro

Due to the advanced state of deterioration of the road surface through the tunnel, resurfacing is required to restore safe operating conditions. The work will consist of milling, paving, and re-striping of the north and southbound lanes through the tunnel. In the interest of public safety, CR-517 will be closed to traffic on or about Tuesday, December 13, 2022.

(8/23/2022) Traffic Advisory: Bridge P-28 Geotechnical Investigation

The County will be conducting geotechnical soil borings at Bridge P-28 on CR 675 (DeGroat Road) in Sandyston Township. Work will take place starting on Wednesday August 24th and is expected to take two working days to complete.

(6/2/2021)  Tomco Construction Company will be installing a SCMUA 4" Leachate force main along certain areas of State Route 94 between Old Beaver Run Road in Lafayette and Lasinski Road in Hardyston Twp.

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 7, 2021, and will occur at night between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Traffic control will consist of a single lane flagger controlled operation.

Elizabethtown Gas Company-Gas Main Extension Project-Stanhope Road-County Route 605

Please see attached Project Notice regarding the Elizabethtown Gas gas main extension project in Sparta Township, on Stanhope Road, Sussex County Route 605. Construction is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Penn Bower Contracting in conjunction with Elizabethtown gas company will be installing a 6” gas main across Woodport Road, State Route 181, to the intersection of Stanhope Road, CR 605. This work will begin the night of November 5, and could take 2 nights to complete. This project will include a closure of SR 181 with detours along local municipal roads and Stanhope Road. The work will be completed between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The same company is tentatively scheduled to begin a night project on Sparta Avenue, CR 517 on Sunday November 8. This project will begin at Knoll Road and continue to SR 181, then in and along SR 181 to the intersection of Main Street and Woodport Road in Sparta. This project will include single lane, flagger controlled traffic patterns.


ThorLabs-Intersection Work-Sparta Avenue & Woodside Avenue

On Monday, October 12, 2020, Porchetta Land & Site (contractor)in conjunction with ThorLabs, Inc., will begin construction of the new intersection roadway to be known as Quantum Leap Drive. The work will consist of, but not limited to, the following items:

  • Water & Sewer disconnect for the old Newton Pizza & Nova Phase building.
  • Demolition of existing sidewalks.
  • Installation of drainage pipe in and along Sparta Avenue.
  • Relocation of Utility Poles and related amenities. This portion of the project is anticipated to begin in approximately 3 weeks from Monday and is anticipated to be completed within the site.
  • Installation of Concrete sidewalk, ADA curb ramps (at the 4 corners of the intersection) and curbing along a newly widened roadway.
  • Installation of a new Traffic Signal at the intersection. This portion will be completed most likely through the winter months and will be coordinated with Sussex County Division of Bridge & Traffic.
  • Installation of traffic striping, which will include a left turn lane onto Woodside Avenue.

The duration of this project is dependent upon the relocation of the utilities and the installation of the Traffic signal.

Any required Traffic Control will be conducted by the Newton Police and a Traffic Control Company.

This work is being Completed under Sussex County Road opening permit #48(2020).

(4/8/2020) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 Main Street Sparta Township
Bridge Q-06, Main Street over Wallkill River

Keller & Kirkpatrick, the County's design consultant for the project, is advancing the 90% bridge replacement design plans and specifications for the project. NJDEP completed their review of the project and Flood Hazard Area and Freshwater Wetlands permits have been issued. A construction timeframe has not been established, however, it is anticipated that construction will take place under a full road closure with a posted detour. (2/19/2019) Improvements to the Intersection of CR-607, Crescent Road, and Lakeside Boulevard, Sussex County Signal SC-36 Intersection of River Styx Road (CR-607), Crescent Road, and Lakeside Boulevard, Hopatcong Borough

Sussex County applies to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for two 2019 Local Aid Infrastructure Fund (LAIF) discretionary grants. If approved, these LAIF grants will provide up to $800,000 towards the replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 carrying Main Street over the Wallkill River in Sparta Township and up to $250,000 towards the replacement Sussex County Signal SC-36 at the intersection of County Route 607 (aka River Styx Road), Crescent Road, and Lakeside Boulevard in Hopatcong Borough. Immediate Closure Sussex County Bridge D-18 - Fenwick Road Frankford Township

Bridge Closure Advisory:
Sussex County Bridge D-18, Fenwick Road Frankford Twp.

During the recent engineering investigation of Sussex County Bridge D-18 it was determined the continued structural degradation of the bridge represents a significant operational safety issue to the traveling public. The currently deployed safety devices are not sufficient to ensure a reasonable level of operational safety for the continued use of this structure.

In the interests of public safety, the County has initiated immediate efforts to close this bridge to vehicular traffic. The closure will remain in place until such time as the deficiencies have been fully evaluated and remedial measures capable of restoring an acceptable level of operational safety have been implemented.

We regret we could not have provided more advanced notice, but paramount to our efforts is the protection of the traveling public’s safety.

(11/21/2017) Bridge X-20 Closed - Wantage Township Carrying Berry Road over a Tributary of the West Branch of the Papakating Creek. Damage sustained during the storms of 2011 and subsequent storm events (Hurricane Sandy and other significant flows) have resulted in continued deterioration of the masonry substructure and roadway embankments at Bridge X-20. In the interest of public safety Bridge X-20 has been closed pending construction of a full bridge replacement.


(12/04/2015) Bridge S-25, CR-622 (Newton-Swartswood Rd) Weight Posting Reduction Please see attached for a public notice regarding the pending reduction of weight posting of Sussex County Bridge S-25 on CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in the Swartswood section of Stillwater. Installation of revised bridge weight limit signs will commence as soon as sign fabrication is complete and all utility markouts have cleared. These details have been developed by the Sussex County Division of Engineering to augment, and as appropriate replace, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Standard Construction Details.

Provide rules, regulations, and standards for site plans and subdivisions and procedures for review of site plans and subdivisions within the County's jurisdiction.

The Sussex County Division of Engineering is charged with overseeing the numerous facets associated with maintaining, improving, and monitoring the County's Transportation network. The Division works closely with the Division of Facilities Management providing project support and civil/survey design services for a variety of facility related capital improvement projects. Additionally, the Division of Engineering provides technical support to the Division of Planning.

Included within the Department's responsibilities are tasks such as in-house design of road and bridge improvement projects, management of multimillion dollar design projects, monitoring the condition of bridges; signals; signs; traffic markings and other similar infrastructure items, developing long term capital budgets, construction stakeout, ROW surveys, management of county road and bridge construction projects, track traffic trends, and monitor work within the county right of way through road opening and driveway permits.
