Newton High School students have joined the battle against hunger in Sussex County. On April 13, 2010, the latest Champions for Charity held a food drive to benefit the food pantry at the Sussex County Division of Social Services, where the demand for food continues to grow faster than the agency's ability to meet the need.

Sussex County Freeholder Director Jeffrey Parrott and Freeholder Susan Zellman were on hand to assist with the food collection and congratulate students and faculty at Newton High School for their efforts in collecting 7,170 pounds of food.

Students and faculty at Newton High School took a creative approach by attaining donations from various clubs and organizations. Jim McAndrew of PODS of Northern New Jersey donated a POD for students to store their donations, which essentially made the success of the drive possible. The National Honor Society, Jr. National Honor Society, Newton Rotary, Class of 2011 and Newton ShopRite made monetary donations for food to be purchased. Advantage Signs donated a sign to announce the drive and motivate students. Brandon Jennings, President of the National Honor Society, Abby Estevez of the Student Council and Danielle DeFeo, Co-President of Interact headed the event, and the entire school was involved with the food drive.

Pope John XXIII Regional High School was the first to participate in "Champions for Charity" on November 3, 2009, followed by High Point Regional High School on December 16, Wallkill Valley Regional High School on January 14, Sparta High School on March 1, and Sussex County Technical School on March 18. Newton High School is the sixth of ten high schools participating in this project, which is designed to help maintain food supplies over the course of the year and not just at holiday time, when both donations and demand are at their highest.

If anyone is in need of food for themselves, their family or their pets, they can stop by the Division of Social Services, 83 Spring Street, Suite 203, Newton, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. No appointments are necessary.
