July is UV Safety Month

Release Date: July 02, 2018
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are the main cause of skin cancer. Sussex County ranks #6 in the state of New Jersey for melanoma (the most deadly form of skin cancer).

It's July and time to celebrate UV Safety Month! The summer season has finally arrived and that means more time outside for many Sussex County residents and visitors. It's important to protect your skin from the sun's Ultraviolet (UV) rays which is the main cause of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. There are 3 major kinds of skin cancer, including Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Unfortunately, Sussex County has the 6th highest age-adjusted, invasive cancer incidence rate of Melanoma in the State of New Jersey.

These are just some of the reasons why the Sussex County Division of Health is proud to participate in UV Safety Month and help raise awareness of the risks of sun damage.

UV damage can also cause wrinkles, blotchy skin and damage your eyes. Anyone can get skin cancer, but the risk is greatest for people with white or light-colored skin with freckles, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes.

During the month of July, join us in taking action to prevent skin cancer and reduce the risk of UV damage by practicing sun safe behaviors.

  • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes.
