World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15, 2025 Grow the Conversation – Recognize the Signs, Reduce the Risks!
Every year on June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is commemorated in America and worldwide to raise awareness about the millions of older adults who experience elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.
Elder abuse comes in many forms. It can be financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual, or social. Elder abuse can occur once, or many times and can vary in severity. It can include one or a combination of the different types of abuse. Elder abuse can be defined as a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person.
Each county has a designated Adult Protective Services (APS) provider responsible for responding to reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation by screening and investigating reports, meeting with individuals to assess their needs and recommending necessary services. All records and communications related to reports, evaluations, or services provided are confidential.
If someone you know is 18 years of age or older, living in the community and is the subject of abuse, neglect and/or exploitation, contact your county APS office. The Division of Social Services is the legally designated APS office to investigate concerns about an elderly, disabled or blind person in Sussex County. The agency is located at 83 Spring Street, Suite 203, in Newton and can be reached by calling 973-383-3600. In case of an emergency, call 911 or contact your local police department.
