The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority is proud to announce a video release of the SCMUA American Flag Retirement Program, which demonstrates the unique partnership with Abbey Glen Pet Memorial Park and the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, for the proper and respectful retirement of unserviceable American flags.

The SCMUA American Flag Retirement Program is celebrating its fifth year and is the only such initiative statewide. It was developed as an environmentally-focused method of combusting large quantities of flags without releasing harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. Abbey Glen is noted to have the first NJDEP issued facility air permit for the annual combustion of American flags.

As a result of this program, over 4,750 pounds of flags that have been collected at the SCMUA Recycling Center are subsequently properly incinerated under State and American Legion guidelines. The ashes of the retired flags are interred onto the graves of fallen service men and women at the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The goal of the program, and this informational video, is to renew awareness of the need to provide environmentally sound alternatives for the final disposition of our national symbol.
