Coping with Stress
(Newton, NJ) The Administration on Aging reports that families are the major provider of long-term care. At the same time research shows that caregiving exacts a heavy emotional toll. Almost fifty percent of all caregivers are over the age of 50, making them more vulnerable to a decline in their own health. Studies have also shown that counseling and support services can reduce caregiver stress to help them cope more effectively with their responsibilities.
The Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services recognizes the need to support caregivers during the current public health crisis. The Division of Senior Services will be facilitating a virtual Zoom-based support group as well as an in-person support group for caregivers during the social distancing era. The in-person group will be offered one time per month, funding is provided under Title III of the Older Americans Act.
The Zoom-based Caregiver Support Group will meet virtually from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the first Friday of each month beginning Friday, September 4, 2020. Participants must register by the 15th of the preceding month.
The in-person Caregiver Support Group will physically meet at the Hopatcong Community Resource & Wellness Center located at 47 Hopatchung Road in Hopatcong from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on the 3rd Tuesday of each month beginning Tuesday, September 15, 2020. Participants must practice social distancing and facial coverings must be worn during this session. Participants must register by the 4th of the preceding month.
