at Debden Airfield in England, circa 1943
On January 29, 1944, First Lieutenant Burt C. Wyman of the U.S. Army Air Corp's Fourth Fighter Group, was shot down and killed during a combat mission over Belgium. More than 70 years later, his wristwatch and other remains from the crash site, made their way back to his family in Vernon NJ. The story of this remarkable journey will be presented on Saturday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dorothy Henry Library on Route 94 in Vernon.
"Honoring a Veteran," a presentation and display created by Lieutenant Wyman's nephew, Chris Wyman, details the amazing detective work done by cemetery volunteers with the U.S. Memory Grand Est France, who were so instrumental in uniting the family with photos and remains from the actual crash site. In addition to Saturday's presentation, photos and other artifacts will be on display at the Dorothy Henry Library throughout May. Both the presentation and display are free and open to the public.
