What Have You Got To Give?

United Way of Sussex County and Partners, in collaboration with Pass It Along’s Serve-a-thon are asking the entire Sussex County community to conduct food drives to restock our pantries for the upcoming summer months.

In Sussex County, in the 2006-07 school year, 1,566 children received free lunch & 901 children received reduced lunch. According to America’s Second Harvest, "children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of food insecurity because even mild undernutrition can have adverse impacts on behavior, school performance, and cognitive development." Our local food pantries are seeing increasing numbers of struggling families utilizing their food pantries on a regular basis instead of just at the end of the month or for a one-time basis. With the summer months approaching and schools being out, we anticipate many parents relying on our food pantries even more.

Please join us and conduct a food drive and show that you support our community in need! If you are planning on having a food drive, please let us know so that we can add you to our list. Food drives can be conducted up through Friday, May 16th. All food has to be dropped off at the Sussex County Community College under the pavilion between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 17th.

If you are joining us in this effort, have any questions or would like additional copies of our flyer, please do not hesitate to contact Christine Florio, Sussex County Division of Community and Youth Services at (973) 948-6000 ext. 226 or cflorio@sussex.nj.us
