United We Ride!

Release Date: December 19, 2007
Federal transit law was recently amended to require that all projects selected for federal funding be derived from a "locally developed, coordinated public transit-human services transportation plan."

Sussex County's new Human Services Transportation Coordination Committee held its first meeting on June 8, 2007. The initial mandate for this group was to identify needs and gaps in our local human services transportation system and to develop a preliminary plan to transport our elderly, disabled and low income citizens more efficiently.

Representatives from 12 local agencies have been participating in this planning process and developed a Sussex County Human Services Transportation Coordination Plan that has been submitted to New Jersey Transit, which is the designated lead planning agency for New Jersey. The plan has been approved by the committee and the Citizens Advisory Council and was adopted by the Board of Chosen Freeholders on December 19, 2007. 2008 will mark the beginning of the actual work toward our identified goals.

It is imperative that any entity that may wish to apply for federal transportation funding be a part of this process and the committee's first order of business in 2008 will be outreach to transportation providers that may not be aware of this new process. If anyone wishes to join the committee, please contact Betsy Towle at (973) 383-3600 ext. 5140.
