Sussex County Library System Busier Than Ever

Release Date: March 08, 2023

Newton NJ – As the Sussex County Library System (SCLS) celebrated Read Across America Week (March 2-6), Library Director Will Porter used the opportunity to reflect on the gains the SCLS has made in the past year after fully restoring open hours and ending the occupancy restrictions mandated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It's so great to have our buildings buzzing with activity again,” stated Mr. Porter. “Circulation in 2022 increased 16% over 2021 and continues to rise. Over ½ a million physical items were checked out, with another 132,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks downloaded. Building visits are up by 27% with 227,000 people through the doors in 2022, and programming numbers are through the roof. Over 11,000 people attended storytimes, concerts, educational programs and more in 2022.”

The SCLS continues to make great strides with new offerings such as Sensory-Friendly Storytimes, made possible through a grant from the Library Services Technology Act; and introducing wireless printing from any internet-connected device. “I am also pleased to announce printing costs can be paid by credit card,” stated Mr. Porter. “In our increasingly cashless society it’s great to finally be able to meet that demand.”
