Compulsive Gambling – Help is Available

Release Date: December 27, 2019

A representative from the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey recently attended a Sussex County Mental Health Board Meeting to provide valuable information about gambling addiction. The Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Community and Youth Services would like to share this information as a resource for those afflicted by a gambling addiction and/or family and friends seeking guidance.

A gambling disorder - frequently referred to as "gambling addiction" - refers to an almost uncontrollable urge to gamble, despite the consequences it has on one's health, happiness, or financial security. Activities that involve gambling trigger the brain's system in much the same way alcohol and drugs do. If left untreated, problem gambling can lead to bankruptcy, imprisonment, or even suicide. Help is available! If you or a loved one suspect that you may be struggling with the "hidden addiction," call or text the free, confidential hotline, 800-GAMBLER or visit https://800gambler.org/ external link. Reach out today for support, treatment, and hope.

For additional information about addiction prevention and recovery, please contact the Sussex County Division of Community and Youth Services at 973-940-5200.
