Sussex County Completes the 2013 Mental Health Plan

The 2013 Sussex County Mental Health Plan was approved by the Board of Chosen Freeholders at their meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. At the same meeting, a Proclamation was issued by the Board recognizing the month of May as "Mental Health Awareness Month." Mental health advocates, community members and agency representatives attended to show their support of the Mental Health Plan, and make evident their interest in its implementation.

The Mental Health Plan outlines four planning priorities: outreach, education & awareness, collaboration and advocacy. Each priority area includes goals, recommendations and action steps. The goals and the recommendations will serve as the framework for strategic planning. The new infrastructure in the Plan will allow for a system to address important mental health issues.

"The Mental Health Plan Update process has provided the opportunity for consumers, professionals, and providers to collaborate in order to establish priorities, goals and strategies addressing this critical topic," said Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator for the Sussex County Department of Human Services.

Specific action steps will be implemented from May 2013 through May 2016. Utilization of annual goals and measurable outcomes will allow the Mental Health Board and the community to monitor the progress of the Planning Committee. Updates will be provided at each open public meeting of the Mental Health Board. Ultimately, the Board hopes to serve as an organizing influence in the area of mental health within Sussex County.
