Simplified Nutrition Assistance for Seniors
The Sussex County Division of Social Services is pleased to announce the Simplified Nutrition Assistance for Seniors (SNAS) Program. The SNAS Program is an outreach effort designed to assist elderly New Jersey residents receiving only Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to have easier access when applying for Food Stamp benefits.
Eligible applicants for SNAS must be age 65 or older, not currently receiving Food Stamp benefits, live alone and have no earned income. There are two Food Stamp allotment amounts for the SNAS Program which are based on the applicant's monthly rent/mortgage and the allowable utility deduction. If the SNAS applicant's rent/mortgage and utility deduction is equal to or less than $563.00, the SNAS applicant will receive $83.00 a month in Food Stamps. If their rent/mortgage and utility deduction is greater than $563.00, the SNAS applicant will receive $141.00 a month in Food Stamps. Food Stamp allotments will be credited to an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card which SNAS participants will receive by mail. The EBT cards can be pinned over the telephone to alleviate the client from having to come into the office.
Social Services will mail SNAS applications to eligible individuals. Applications will be processed without a face-to-face or telephone interview, and will be certified for 24 months with no interim contact.
Interested applicants can contact the Sussex County Division of Social Services by calling 973-383-3600 or by e-mail at cwa.scdss@xbp.dhs.state.nj.us. The agency is located at 83 Spring Street, Suite 203, Newton, NJ, and the hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
