CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR HISTORIC MARKER 2023:
Open call for applications begins February 18, 2023, and closes on June 30, 2023. Awardees will be presented at the NJ State Fair at the Sussex County Fairgounds in August.
With the generous support of the Board of County Commissioners, the County will designate the following new sites:
The following new historic markers were awarded in 2022:
- Branchville Cemetary, sponsored by the Branchville Borough Historical Society (submitted by Ms. Debbie Anderson)
- Sussex County Alms House and Potter's Field, sponsored and submitted by Mr. Robert Caruso
- Flatbrookville, sponsored by the Walpack Historical Society (submitted by Mr. Don Stieh)
The following new historic markers were awarded in 2021:
- Parker Shaft - Franklin Mine, Franklin Township, sponsored by the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society
- Franklin's World Renowned Zinc Mines, Franklin Township
- Lost Hamlet of Byram, Byram Township, sponsored by the Byram Township Historical Society
The following new historic markers were awarded in 2020:
- Greendell Train Station, Green Township, sponsored by the Lackawanna Cutoff Historical Committee (submitted by Mr. Keith Smolin)
- The Newton Academy, Newton, sponsored by the Sussex County Historical Society (submitted by Ms. Wendy Wyman)
- Wawayanda Furnace, Vernon, sponsored by the Vernon Historical Society (submitted by Ms. Jessi Palladini)

THE SUSSEX COUNTY HISTORIC MARKER PROGRAM
Preserving the history of Sussex County for future generations...
The placement of historic plaques in Sussex County began in the year 2000. Since that time, thirty-two markers have been fabricated and placed at historic sites throughout Sussex County. The program got its beginning when two markers relating the history of Newton were placed in the Newton Park on the Green. The idea came about as part of a project to revitalize the park in a combined program which involved the Sussex County Board of County Commissioners and the Newton Historic Preservation Commission.

Each municipality in Sussex County, no matter how small or large, a town or rural farming community, are very proud of their history and are all what make Sussex County the beautiful and proud area in which we live today. These markers will remind us today of what was here before us so we can take pride in our communities and honor those that went before us.
