Human Services Advisory Council

The Sussex County Human Services Advisory Council is appointed by the Sussex County Board of County Commissioners to review County-level human service activities and to serve as the primary vehicle for making local recommendations to assist both Sussex County government and the New Jersey Department of Human Services on the allocations, provisions, delivery systems and financing of programs designed to meet the needs of human service recipients in Sussex County.

Each county in New Jersey is mandated by the State Department of Human Services to maintain an HSAC. The HSAC has numerous duties including; conducting ongoing needs assessments, preparing a comprehensive Human Services Plan, and making funding recommendations to the Commissioners in regards to grants and other funding sources.

Each HSAC must be comprised of 25% consumers / advocates of social services, 49% providers of social services and the remaining 26% are appointed County and State representatives.

Those wishing to become members of the HSAC should submit a brief resume to the County Human Services Advisory Council Office. The Nominations Subcommittee reviews the resumes and then submits prospective candidates to the HSAC at large for approval which is then forwarded to the Sussex County Commissioners who make the appointments of members. These appointments must be consistent with the percentage rules discussed above. New positions are filled as slots become available.
