Hungry little ants aren't the only threat to your picnic fun this summer but you can protect yourself by following these basic steps.

County Releases Food Safety Public Service Announcement
The Sussex County Division of Health has created a Public Service Announcement on food safety. Timed to coincide with the traditional start of the summer picnic season; the short film stars real Public Health Inspectors from the Sussex County Health Department taking a humorous look at basic food safety in the home. The PSA is appropriate for television or radio use and is available on DVD and on the web site featuring the theme:
Did you know over 76 million cases of food borne illness occur every year in the United States? Hungry little ants aren't the only threat to your picnic fun this summer but you can protect yourself by following these basic steps:
Food safety tips:
  • Keep hands, work surfaces, plates and utensils clean to prevent the spread of bacteria
  • Wash fruits and vegetables, especially if eaten raw
  • Separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods
  • Don’t cross contaminate, use a clean plate for cooked foods
  • Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold
  • Cook foods thoroughly
  • Keep foods covered to prevent contamination by insects, which can carry harmful bacteria and viruses on their bodies
  • Report suspected food-borne illness to your health department
