Keep Your Community Clean

Litter is an important issue in Sussex County not only for health reasons but it is unsightly, interferes with the enjoyment of public places, and lowers the quality of life of the residents in our communities.

The New Jersey Clean Communities Program is a grassroots, statewide, community driven litter abatement program developed to reduce litter in New Jersey. The program is promoted by the mission to change attitudes with regards to littering and the irresponsible handling of solid waste through public information and education. The program is funded through the Clean Communities Act, which generates funds by placing a user's fee on businesses that produce litter generating products.

The purpose of the Sussex County Clean Communities initiative is to encourage countywide comprehensive programs, which support the three prong approach of cleanup, enforcement, and education. This is accomplished through volunteer cleanups and maintenance of public lands, school related educational activities and litter abatement measures. Adopt-a-County-Road is an anti-litter program that encourages organizations, agencies, or individuals to adopt a Sussex County road in order to remove litter and improve the environment. The requirements of this program include a one (1) year, two (2) mile, four (4) times a year commitment to remove litter from the road. The Sussex County Clean Communities Program also has equipment and supplies available for litter abatement activities, including litter pickers, rakes, safety vests, safety cones, garbage bags, and work gloves.

All municipalities in Sussex County have a municipal level program as well. They are available to their residents and organized by local Municipal Coordinators. Everyone is invited to get involved by always putting trash in the proper receptacles, recycling recyclable materials, and volunteering to help with a cleanup in your community.
