Peer Leader Training Available for Take Control of Your Health and Diabetic Self-Management Classes
(Newton, NJ) The Sussex County Division of Senior Services is looking for Peer Leaders to lead workshops for seniors, disabled individuals and/or their caregivers who are dealing with chronic conditions, a disability, or living with diabetes. The Take Control of Your Health workshop runs for six-weeks. Each 2 ½ hour per week course is based on a chronic disease self-management model developed by the Self-Management Resource Center. Separately, the Diabetic Self-Management Program also consists of a six-week, 2 ½ hour per week course that assists those living with diabetes. Each week the interactive classes are led by Peer Leaders who will assist participants in:
- building the skills necessary to manage symptoms;
- communicating effectively with healthcare professionals;
- developing healthy lifestyles including good nutrition and exercise;
- alleviating fear, anger and frustration;
- making daily tasks easier;
- and getting more out of life.
The courses are supplemented with a manual, "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions," that is provided to each participant.
The Peer Leader Training for the Take Control of Your Health classes, which will also include the Diabetic Self-Management workshops, is sponsored by the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services. The training to become a Peer Leader for both six-week programs will take place on September 26 and 27 and October 1 and 2, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The training will take place at the Sussex County Administrative Center located at One Spring Street, Newton, NJ 07860. Attendance is required at all four days of the workshop in order to become certified.
