Sussex County Team Chosen for National Mobility Institute
SUSSEX COUNTY TEAM CHOSEN FOR NATIONAL MOBILITY INSTITUTE
Sussex County was chosen to send a team of transportation and disability experts to a national conference on accessible transportation in Washington, DC sponsored by Easter Seals. Only fifteen teams from the entire country were accorded this honor through a national competition to choose participants. Sussex County is one of only two teams from the east coast chosen to attend the conference.
Freeholder Susan Zellman, who is also the chair of the New Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, will participate on the Sussex County team, as will Tim Sharpe, Regional Program Administrator for Local Programs from NJ TRANSIT. Other team members are Robert Panzer, Board Chair, Center for Independent Living; Carol Novrit, Division Director of Sussex County Division of Social Services; and Tom Drabic, Principal Transportation Planner for Sussex County.
Other community leaders who have been selected to participate consist of Chelan Douglas Mobility Council (Washington State); Cobb/Douglas/Fulton Counties/Metro Atlanta (Georgia); Delaware County Mobility Management (Pennsylvania); Greeley/Weld County Mobility Messeng (Colorado); Houston METRO and MHMRA (Texas); Ada and Canyon Counties (Idaho); Johnson County (Iowa); Lextran/Lexington (Kentucky); North Dakota Souris Basin Transportation; Nezperce/ Latah/Lewis/Clearwater (Idaho); Northern Arizona Transportation; Oshkosh (Wisconsin); Southeast Tennessee Accessibility Connection; and Shiawassee County Community Transportation (Michigan).
Easter Seals will cover all costs for team members to attend a four day working conference on July 12, 2009 through July 15, 2009. Each team will work on exploring specific issues related to the transportation of people with disabilities and develop strategies for meeting those needs. With support from Easter Seals, the team will continue to meet to work on implementing these issues and strategies throughout the year.
