March into Spring with National Nutrition Month ®
Release Date: February 26, 2008

There's no better month than National Nutrition Month ® (March) to jump-start your plans for trying new foods and new physical activities.

Now's the time to spring into action and tune-up your eating habits! There's no better month than National Nutrition Month ® (March) to jump-start your plans for trying new foods and new physical activities. National Nutrition Month ®, created in 1973 by the American Dietetic Association, promotes healthful eating by providing practical nutrition guidance and focusing attention on making informed food choices and developing sound physical activity habits.

This year, the ADA is recommending that people focus on the facts about nutrition through its “Nutrition: It’s a Matter of Fact” campaign. A great way to get the facts about healthy eating is through the MyPyramid food guidance system. MyPyramid replaces the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992. The recommendations of the new food pyramid are more individualized according to gender, age, height and weight. However, the emphasis is still placed on eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and limiting the intake of saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium. Incorporating regular physical activity into our daily lives is also a new element in the symbol.

Consulting with a Registered Dietician (RD) can also help you answer more complex nutrition questions. It can be difficult to navigate through the facts and fiction and RDs can answer questions like, “are fresh fruits and vegetables healthier than frozen or canned, or does eating carbohydrates cause weight gain?” A consultation with a Registered Dietitian can debunk the myths and provide you with the latest science-based information. The Sussex County Division of Senior Services is presenting "Serving Up Good Nutrition" in recognition of National Nutrition Month in March. Seniors are invited to attend the FREE HealthEase initiative that includes information, lunch, fun and prizes.
