(6/8/2018) Sussex County Bridge V-55 Temporary Repairs - CR 515 / Vernon Stockholm Road - Vernon Township

Please be advised that construction of Bridge V-55 Temporary Repairs is anticipated to start on or about Monday June 11, 2018. It is anticipated that CR 515 will remain open to traffic for the duration of construction with daily single lane, flagger controlled work zones implemented, as required during work hours, to facilitate construction.

Please see the attached public notice for additional information regarding the Bridge V-55 repairs.


(6/8/2018) 2018 Crack Sealing Project Start-Up Notice

Please find attached the Project Startup Notice for the 2018 Sussex County Crack Sealing Program. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin on Monday June 11th, 2018 at 7:00 A.M.

The complete list of programmed routes is included in the notice. All work is expected to advance under a mobile single lane closure.

Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety Winter Closeout 2018 Seasonal Report

Attached you will find both the Division of Public Works and the Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety's 2017-2018 Winter Closeout - Seasonal Reports as well as the 2018 Spring Reports.

The Division of Public Works Winter Closeout 2018 Seasonal Report highlights some of the tasks the Division's dedicated and skillful staff focused on while they worked to keep the 620 lane miles of County roadways open and safe. The Division has now switched gears to 'Spring Season' based tasks that are highlighted within our 2018 Spring Seasonal Report.

The Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety's Winter Closeout 2018 Seasonal Report highlights some of the tasks the Office's dedicated staff were focused on over the Winter months, while keeping the County's 449 bridge, 14,000 signs, 1,700 pavement markings and 38 electrified signals operational and safe. The Office of Bridge and Traffic Safety is also in full swing carrying out 'Spring Season' based tasks that are highlighted within their 2018 Spring Seasonal Report.

Project Update Notice FY 2017 Sussex County Resurfacing Program

Please be advised the FY2017 Sussex County Resurfacing Program will be on hold as of today, June 5, 2018, and is scheduled to resume on or about Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Work will recommence on CR 650 a.k.a. Deckertown Turnpike. Please refer to the attached notice for more details.


(6/1/2018) Reconstruction and Realignment of Sussex County Bridge X-09 CR 565 Wantage Township

Bridge X-09, County Route 565 over Papakating Creek, Wantage Township

A construction contract for the Bridge X-09 reconstruction project was awarded to Sparwick Contracting of Lafayette, NJ, at the December 13, 2017 Board of Chosen Freeholders meeting.

To date, the contractor has completed installation of the soil erosion and sediment control measures and tree clearing for the utility relocations.

Starting on Monday, June 4th, daily road closures will be in effect on CR 565 at the bridge site, from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., in order for the contractor to construct accesses for the utility pole relocations. JCP&L will begin pole installation and line work starting on Wednesday, June 6th under the same daily road closure. The utility relocation work could take from 5-7 days to complete. Following JCP&L's work, Century Link will relocate their lines to the new poles – that work may take place under a daily closure or flagger operation. The proposed utility work schedule could shift dependent on the weather conditions.

On or about June 26th, CR 565 at the bridge site will be closed to traffic and demolition of the existing bridge will commence. Project completion and reopening the road to traffic is scheduled for December 2018.

(12/1/2017) CR-609 (Lakeside Avenue) and Hopatcong Street - Retaining Wall Repairs

(12/1/2017) Repairs to Sussex County Bridge X-08 - CR 565 (Martin's Station-Glenwood Road) - Wantage Township

Please be advised that as of November 29, 2017, the Repairs to Sussex County Bridge X-08 are substantially complete. All signage along CR 565 designating the work zone has been removed and all construction activities have been completed. A few minor punch list items remain. Please see the attached public notice for additional information regarding the Repairs to Bridge X-08.


(11/21/2017) Bridge X-20 Closed - Wantage Township Carrying Berry Road over a Tributary of the West Branch of the Papakating Creek. Damage sustained during the storms of 2011 and subsequent storm events (Hurricane Sandy and other significant flows) have resulted in continued deterioration of the masonry substructure and roadway embankments at Bridge X-20. In the interest of public safety Bridge X-20 has been closed pending construction of a full bridge replacement.


(11/1/2017) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge O-07 - Passaic Avenue - Ogdensburg Borough

Please be advised that as of 11 a.m. today, November 1, 2017, Passaic Avenue has been fully opened to traffic at Bridge O-07. All construction activities have been completed and a few punch list items remain. For additional information regarding the Replacement of Bridge O-07, please see the attached public notice.


(10/5/2017) Project Update 2017 Striping Program

Please find attached the Project Update for the 2017 Sussex County Epoxy Striping Program. All the County roads that were previously scheduled to be striped have been completed on October 3, 2017.

Using additional identified funding County Route segments on CR 607, CR 565 and CR 631 will be striped. The completed County Route segments and the additional Route segments are included in the attached notice. All work is expected to advance under a mobile single lane closure.


(8/1/2017) Sussex County Bridge L-10 Temporary Repairs - Decker Road

Sussex County Bridge L-10 Roadway Stabilization and Temporary Repairs
Decker Road, Lafayette Township


Please be advised that as of August 18, 2017, Decker Road at Bridge L-10 has been opened to traffic. As previously advised, the bridge remains a single lane bridge and load restricted to 10 tons. For additional information regarding the Bridge L-10 Roadway Stabilization and Temporary Repairs, please see the attached public notice.


(8/2/2017) CR-517 & Scenic Drive Sight Line Work - Green Township

Joint project between the Township of Green and County of Sussex to enhance the sight lines at the intersection of CR-517 and Scenic Drive in the Township of Green.

Please be advised that on or about August 7, 2017, the above referenced Intersection Sight Line Clearing work will begin. All work will be completed by the Sussex County DPW & JCP&L, under a single-lane, alternating traffic, flagging operations.


(8/1/2017) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge C-17 Roseville Road Byram Township Bridge C-17, Roseville Road over Lackawanna Cutoff

The striping has been completed and the roadway was reopened to traffic at 7:20 a.m. August 1. Work will continue off the roadway for the next few weeks while the contractor completes the final concrete finishing / staining, landscaping and site work under the bridge. See the attached public notice for more information with regard to the project.


(7/28/2017) CR-607 (Maxim Drive) Drainage Work Completion

Please be advised that as of July 28th, 2017, the above referenced drainage repairs have been completed and CR-607 Maxim Drive has been re-opened to traffic. Any remaining work will be conducted under single-lane, alternating traffic, flagging operations. Please see the attached public notice with additional information regarding this project.


(7/11/2017) Project Update Notice: Sussex County 2015 HRRRP

Please find attached the most current public notice regarding the 2015 Sussex County High Risk Rural Roads Program. Micro Surfacing and Cold Applied High Friction Surface Treatment application have been completed on CR 622. Application of traffic stripes & markings are in progress. Please refer to the attached notice for more information.


(6/23/2017) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge C-17 Roseville Road Byram Township Bridge C-17, Roseville Road over Lackawanna Cutoff

The Contractor has been moving forward with installation of the arch spandrel walls, having installed all the reinforcement steel and completed various spandrel wall pours. Once the spandrel walls are completed, the steel for the parapets will be set. See the attached public notice for more information with regard to the project.


(4/26/2017) CR-613 - White Deer Plaza Median Reconstruction, Lake Mohawk in Sparta Twp.

Attached is a project completion notice for the above referenced project. Please be advised that as of Thursday, April 20, 2017 work has been completed on the new median and all temporary traffic control devices have been removed. The remaining restriping work associated with the median replacement will be completed as weather and crew availability permits, but is not anticipated to require roadway closures or significant impacts to the traveling public.


(4/21/2017) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 Main Street Sparta Township Bridge Q-06, Main Street over Wallkill River

The preliminary design of the project is advancing. Aesthetic bridge elements are being developed and will be presented to the Sparta Town Council. A utility meeting was held on site on April 11th and a NJDEP pre-application meeting is scheduled for the first week of May. (1/20/2017) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge Q-06 Main Street Sparta Township Bridge Q-06, Main Street over Wallkill River

A design contract has been awarded to Keller & Kirkpatrick, Inc., for development of construction plans and specifications for the Replacement of Bridge Q-06. It is the County's intention to award a construction contract for the project in the fall of 2018 with construction to commence summer 2019. Project status updates will be issued periodically as the project progresses. See the attached public notice for more information regarding this project.


(11/08/2016) CR-517 & CR-669 Gas Main Trench repairs

Attached is an updated Public Notice in reference to the Gas main trench repairs along County Routes 517, Decker Pond Road and County Route 669, Limecrest Road. All predetermined 18" removal and replacement areas have been completed. At the request of Elizabethtown Gas Company, and consideration of the Sussex County Department of Engineering, the 2" mill and pave has been postponed until the spring of 2017. At that time, an updated public announcement will be distributed.


(10/5/2016) Sussex County Bridge V-15 Repairs - Sand Hill Road - Vernon Township

Please be advised that as of Tuesday October 4, 2016 Sand Hill Road has been fully opened to traffic at Bridge V-15. All construction activities have been completed. For additional information regarding the repairs to Bridge V-15, please see the attached public notice.


(9/14/2016) Rehabilitation of Sussex County Bridge E-04 - CR 631 (Franklin Avenue) - Franklin Borough

Please be advised as of 12:00PM, today, Wednesday, September 14, 2016, CR 631 (Franklin Avenue) at Bridge E-04 has been opened to all traffic. All construction activities have been completed and only a few punch list items remain. All previously installed weight restrictions on the bridge have been removed. For additional information regarding the Rehabilitation of Bridge E-04, please see the attached public notice.


(9/9/2016) Rehabilitation of Sussex County Bridge P-36, CR-646 (a.k.a. Jager Road) in Sandyston Twp.

As of Friday, September 2, 2016, CR-646 (Jager Road) has been open to traffic at Bridge P-36. For additional information regarding the Rehabilitation of Bridge P-36, please see the attached public notice.


(9/9/2016) Rehabilitation of Bridge S-10, CR-617 (Fairview Lake Road) in Stillwater Township

As of today, Friday September 9, 2016, CR-617 (Fairview Lake Road) at Bridge S-10 has been opened to traffic. All construction activities have been completed and only a few final punch list items remain. For additional information regarding the Rehabilitation of Bridge S-10, please see the attached public notice.


(9/1/2016) Rehabilitation of Railroad Spur Crossing - Limecrest Road - CR669 - Lafayette Township

Attached is a final construction notice for the above referenced project. Please be advised that construction was completed this morning and the road was re-opened. CR-669 (Limecrest Road) is now opened to through traffic at the rehabilitation location (RR Tracks). Detour signs will be removed. Work was completed by Braen Stone Industries, or their designees using private funds under the authorization of a Sussex County Road Opening permit.


(8/19/2016) Project Update Notice: 2016 Sussex County Micro Surfacing

Please find attached the most recent project update notice for the subject project.

Micro Surfacing has been completed on CR 517 and temporary centerline placed. Micro Surfacing on CR 620 should be completed on Monday August 22, 2016, weather pending. Placement of permanent traffic stripes and markings will be scheduled within two weeks following.

(12/04/2015) Bridge S-25, CR-622 (Newton-Swartswood Rd) Weight Posting Reduction Please see attached for a public notice regarding the pending reduction of weight posting of Sussex County Bridge S-25 on CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in the Swartswood section of Stillwater. Installation of revised bridge weight limit signs will commence as soon as sign fabrication is complete and all utility markouts have cleared. If you have any questions or concerns with regard to this load posting or the bridge structure, please feel free to contact the Sussex County Division of Engineering.


(11/5/2015) Bridge B-10, Recreational Road (a.k.a. County Fairgrounds Road) - Opening & Weight Posting


Please be advised that on or about Monday, November 9, 2015, Bridge B-10 in the Borough of Branchville will be weight posted at 4 tons and opened to weight restricted traffic. Please see the attached public notice for additional information regarding this weight posting.

These details have been developed by the Sussex County Division of Engineering to augment, and as appropriate replace, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Standard Construction Details.

Land Development Standards
Provide rules, regulations, and standards for site plans and subdivisions and procedures for review of site plans and subdivisions within the County's jurisdiction.

The Sussex County Division of Engineering is charged with overseeing the numerous facets associated with maintaining, improving, and monitoring the County's Transportation network. The Division works closely with the Division of Facilities Management providing project support and civil/survey design services for a variety of facility related capital improvement projects. Additionally, the Division of Engineering provides technical support to the Division of Planning.

Included within the Department's responsibilities are tasks such as in-house design of road and bridge improvement projects, management of multimillion dollar design projects, monitoring the condition of bridges; signals; signs; traffic markings and other similar infrastructure items, developing long term capital budgets, construction stakeout, ROW surveys, management of county road and bridge construction projects, track traffic trends, and monitor work within the county right of way through road opening and driveway permits.
