The Sussex county HAZMAT team, consisting of 20+/- full time county employees trained to the technician
level is available to respond to environmental and public health emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A collaborative effort between the Sussex County
Sheriff's Office, the Sussex County
Office of the Prosecutor, the
Sussex County
Division of Public Works, and the Sussex County
Sussex County Division of Health, the team was recognized by the State of New Jersey,
Department of Environmental Protection as a Model Program for Hazardous
Material Response.
With the assistance of the County
Office
of Emergency Management and the
Sussex County Public Safety Training
Academy
, the program has matured into a valuable asset and tool for the
municipalities of Sussex County.
State of the Art HAZMAT equipment
including response vehicles, air monitoring instruments, personal protective
equipment, and Decon units were all paid for through Homeland Security
Grants received from the State and Federal Government with very little
impact from county tax dollars.

Members of the Sussex County HAZMAT
team, under direction of the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, assisted in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort in the fall of 2005.
