Personal Protection

Most mosquitoes bite at dusk or at night, but some kinds will bite during the day. Mosquitoes can transmit serious and sometimes fatal diseases, such as the West Nile Virus, to humans.

Here are some helpful tips to protect yourself and help cut down on the number of mosquitoes.

  • Keep window and door screens in good repair
  • Avoid exposure to mosquitoes at their peak times of activity (dusk and dawn)
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
  • Wear light-colored clothes (dark colors absorb heat, which attracts mosquitoes)
  • Use a Mosquito Repellent recommended by the Federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Current guidance suggests products containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of lemon eucalyptus.
    Read the CDC Recommendation.
  • Be mindful of label directions and reapplication schedules
  • For information on children and DEET see the American Academy of Pediatrics¬† website.
