(5/18/2016) Public Notice: Upcoming 2016 County Roadway Maintenance

Please find attached a notice which summarizes the roadway maintenance projects currently under development within the Sussex County Division of Engineering for the 2016 Construction Season. Project specific notices with more detail will be distributed as construction approaches.


(5/18/2016) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge O-07 - Passaic Avenue - Ogdensburg Borough

Construction of the Replacement of Bridge O-07 on Passaic Avenue in Ogdensburg Borough is anticipated to start the end of June to the beginning of July. Passaic Avenue will be closed to traffic at Bridge O-07 for the duration of construction with detour posted via CR 517, Plant Street, and Brooks Flat Road. Variable Message Boards shall be placed in the vicinity of the bridge a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the road closure to advise the public of the anticipated closure date. The anticipated construction duration for the project is 5 months. Please see the attached Advanced Construction Notice for additional information regarding the Replacement of Bridge O-07.


(5/13/2016) Rehabilitation of Bridge S-10, CR-617 (Fairview Lake Road) in Stillwater Township

The County has received bids for the Rehabilitation of Bridge S-10 on CR 617 (Fairview Lake Road) in Stillwater Township, and a recommendation of award has been made to the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders for Reivax Contracting of Newark for $301,594.00. The Sussex County Division of Engineering will be holding a Pre-Construction Meeting for Bridge S-10 on Thursday, May 19, at 10 a.m. on the Third Floor of the Sussex County Administrative Building, Room 3B, with Reivax Contracting to discuss the construction schedule, material ordering, construction submittals, traffic control, contact information, etc. See the attached public notice with additional information regarding this project. Feel free to forward this information to anyone who may be interested in attending the meeting. If you plan on attending, please let us know so that we can keep you up to date in the event the pre-construction meeting needs to be moved.


(5/13/2016) Rehabilitation of Sussex County Bridge E-04 - CR 631 (Franklin Avenue) - Franklin Borough

Construction of the Rehabilitation of Bridge E-04 on CR 631 (Franklin Avenue) in Franklin Borough is anticipated to start on July 13, 2016 with an anticipated construction duration of 2.5 months. CR 631 (Franklin Avenue) will be closed to traffic at Bridge E-04 for the duration of construction with a post detour in place. Please see the attached Advanced Construction Notice for additional information regarding the Rehabilitation of Bridge E-04.


(5/12/2016) Advanced Construction Notice: 2015 High Risk Rural Roads Program Please find attached a notice which summarizes the 2015 High Risk Rural Roads Program scheduled for the upcoming 2016 construction season. The Division of Engineering will send out more detailed notices as construction approaches.

Please find attached a notice which summarizes the 2015 Sussex County Resurfacing Program scheduled for the upcoming 2016 construction season. The Division of Engineering will be coordinating police enhancement efforts as necessary and will send out more detailed notices as construction approaches.


(4/29/2016) Traffic Signal Enhancements at Signal SC-6 (CR-622 & CR-519 near Sussex County Community College in Newton)
Please see attached for a project notice for the above referenced project. Traffic signal enhancement work is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, May 2, 2016. Lane shifts and closure or auxiliary turn lanes will be utilized for construction with no full closure or detour of the roadway anticipated for this work.


(4/26/2016) Repairs to Sussex County Bridge F-13, CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in Fredon Township
Please see attached for a project notice for the above referenced project. Repair work is scheduled to begin on or about Wednesday, April 27, 2016. Work will utilize daily lane shifts or single-lane flagger controlled work zones throughout the course of construction, with no full closure of the roadway anticipated. The previous work at Bridge F-14, which is located a half mile east of the Bridge F-13 location on CR-622, has been completed, and all associated traffic control devices have been removed to prevent any overlap of the two work zones.


(4/15/2016) Repairs to Sussex County Bridge F-14, CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in Fredon Township
Please see attached for a project notice for the above referenced project. Repair work is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, April 18, 2016. Work will utilize daily lane shifts or single-lane flagger controlled work zones throughout the course of construction, with no full closure of the roadway anticipated.


(4/8/2016) Scour Repair of Sussex County Bridge S-16, Carrying Stillwater Road In Stillwater Township
Please see attached for a project notice for the above referenced project. Scour repairs are scheduled to begin on or about Monday, April 11, 2016, pending favorable stream flow conditions (i.e. the stream flow remains low enough to work). Please see the attached public notice for additional information regarding this project.


(3/24/2016) Bridge Q-06 Main Street Sparta Township Road Closure
Bridge Q-06, Main Street over Wallkill River - Geotechnical Soil Borings

The start date for exploratory soil borings for the replacement of Bridge Q-06 has been confirmed for Monday, March 28th and it is expected the work will take two – three days to complete. In the event of rain, which is currently forecast at a 60% chance for Monday, the start of work will be pushed out until Tuesday. Variable message boards have been posted at the bridge advising of the upcoming road closure. The closure will be between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. (3/4/2016) Replacement of Sussex County Bridge C-17 Roseville Road Byram Township Bridge C-17, Roseville Road over Lackawanna Cutoff
The 90% progress plans and specifications have been finalized and will be submitted to NJ Transit and NJDOT Railroad Services for review in the coming week. Freshwater Wetlands and Flood Hazard permit applications have been submitted to NJDEP and are in review. See the attached public notice and detour plan for more information regarding the project.

(12/04/2015) Bridge S-25, CR-622 (Newton-Swartswood Rd) Weight Posting Reduction Please see attached for a public notice regarding the pending reduction of weight posting of Sussex County Bridge S-25 on CR-622 (a.k.a. Newton-Swartswood Road) in the Swartswood section of Stillwater. Installation of revised bridge weight limit signs will commence as soon as sign fabrication is complete and all utility markouts have cleared. If you have any questions or concerns with regard to this load posting or the bridge structure, please feel free to contact the Sussex County Division of Engineering.


(11/5/2015) Bridge B-10, Recreational Road (a.k.a. County Fairgrounds Road) - Opening & Weight Posting


Please be advised that on or about Monday, November 9, 2015, Bridge B-10 in the Borough of Branchville will be weight posted at 4 tons and opened to weight restricted traffic. Please see the attached public notice for additional information regarding this weight posting.

(2/15/2013) Bridge X-20 Closed - Wantage Township Carrying Berry Road over a Tributary of the West Branch of the Papakating Creek. Damage sustained during the storms of 2011 and subsequent storm events (Hurricane Sandy and other significant flows) have resulted in continued deterioration of the masonry substructure and roadway embankments at Bridge X-20. In the interest of public safety Bridge X-20 has been closed pending construction of a full bridge replacement.

These details have been developed by the Sussex County Division of Engineering to augment, and as appropriate replace, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Standard Construction Details.

Land Development Standards
Provide rules, regulations, and standards for site plans and subdivisions and procedures for review of site plans and subdivisions within the County's jurisdiction.

About 

The Sussex County Division of Engineering is charged with overseeing the numerous facets associated with maintaining, improving, and monitoring the County's Transportation network. The Division works closely with the Division of Facilities Management providing project support and civil/survey design services for a variety of facility related capital improvement projects. Additionally, the Division of Engineering provides technical support to the Division of Planning.

Included within the Department's responsibilities are tasks such as in-house design of road and bridge improvement projects, management of multimillion dollar design projects, monitoring the condition of bridges; signals; signs; traffic markings and other similar infrastructure items, developing long term capital budgets, construction stakeout, ROW surveys, management of county road and bridge construction projects, track traffic trends, and monitor work within the county right of way through road opening and driveway permits.
