The Sussex county HAZMAT team, consisting of 20+/- full time county employees trained to the technician level is available to respond to environmental and public health emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A collaborative effort between the Sussex County Sheriff's Office, the Sussex County Office of the Prosecutor, the Sussex County Division of Public Works, and the Sussex County Sussex County Division of Health, the team was recognized by the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection as a Model Program for Hazardous Material Response.

With the assistance of the County Office of Emergency Management and the Sussex County Public Safety Training Academy external link, the program has matured into a valuable asset and tool for the municipalities of Sussex County.

State of the Art HAZMAT equipment including response vehicles, air monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment, and Decon units were all paid for through Homeland Security Grants received from the State and Federal Government with very little impact from county tax dollars.
