"Keeping Your Mind Sharp" FREE Memory Screenings
(Newton, NJ) - The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services in collaboration with Newton Medical Center will observe National Memory Screening Day, Thursday, November 21, 2013, by offering seniors the "Keeping Your Mind Sharp" one hour educational program in conjunction with FREE Memory Screenings performed by a qualified healthcare professional from Newton Medical Center. The event will take place at the Sussex Wantage Library, which is located at 69 Route 639, Wantage, NJ. Memory screenings will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. "Keeping Your Mind Sharp" will be presented at 1:15 p.m. for the convenience of those who would like to attend before or after their memory screenings. Door prizes will be provided after the educational presentation.
An initiative of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), National Memory Screening Day is designed to promote detection of memory problems and provide education about successful aging. The face-to-face, noninvasive screening takes only five to ten minutes and consists of a series of questions and tasks.
AFA encourages screenings for adults who have memory concerns, such as forgetting, trouble concentrating, difficulty performing familiar tasks, trouble recalling names or words, or a family history of Alzheimer's disease, or who want to check their memory now to have the results available for future comparison. The results do not represent a diagnosis, and AFA advises those individuals who score poorly or who have normal scores but are still concerned to follow-up with their physician or another qualified healthcare professional. Results of the Memory Screening are strictly confidential.
