How to Beat the Winter Blues
Release Date: January 04, 2012

This winter be sure to think of ways to keep your loved one and yourself safe, healthy and connected with others.

How to Beat the Winter Blues

The short, dark, snowy days of winter can be a time of isolation and decreased activity. There are things that seniors and their families can do to help get through the season.

  • Keep up social commitments - Continue to arrange rides to church, the senior center or to other activities. Senior Centers often offer activities before and after they serve a hot meal.
  • Keep your loved one moving - Exercise can help seniors feel better. Consider one or all of the Sussex County Division of Senior Services Project Healthy Living Workshops. You may also want to try the Wii Fit, which brings the exercise programs to your living room and provides an excellent way for grandchildren to bond with their grandparents.
  • Help your loved one plant a winter garden - Make their home come alive with flowering indoor plants. Share the gardening chores.
  • Help your loved one organize a closet, drawers of photos - When you organize photos, be sure to have them tell their story. This is a great way to keep family memories and traditions alive.
  • Keep them busy - Knit, bake cookies, string beads. Puzzles and crosswords can be a great joint activity.

This winter be sure to think of ways to keep your loved one and yourself safe, healthy and connected with others. These are just a few suggestions to assist in this effort. For more information, go to: www.caregiving.com .
