Wallkill Valley Students Take on Hunger
Release Date: January 15, 2010

View Printable News Story  --  Wallkill Valley Regional High School students have become the newest “Champions for Charity” by joining the battle against hunger in Sussex County.

Wallkill Valley Regional High School students have become the newest "Champions for Charity" by joining the battle against hunger in Sussex County. On January 14, 2010, they held a food drive to benefit the food pantry at the Sussex County Division of Social Services, where the demand for food continues to grow faster than the agency's ability to meet the need. Not only was each student encouraged to provide non-perishable food items to help their hungry neighbors around the county, but Wallkill Valley Regional High School added its own special flair. Anyone bringing a food item to a sporting event was able to attend for free.

Sussex County Freeholder Director Jeffrey Parrott and Freeholder Phillip Crabb were on hand to assist with the food collection and congratulate students and faculty of Wallkill Valley Regional High School for their fine efforts in collecting over 7,950 pounds of food.

Pope John XXIII Regional High School was the first to participate in "Champions for Charity" on November 3, 2009, followed by High Point Regional High School on the 16th of December. Wallkill Valley Regional High School is the third of ten high schools participating in this project, which is designed to help maintain food supplies over the course of the year and not just at holiday times, when both donations and demand are at their highest.

If anyone is in need of food for themselves, their family or their pets, they can stop by the Division of Social Services, 83 Spring Street, Suite 203, Newton, on Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. No appointments are necessary.
