County Event To Honor Women in the Military and the US Cadet Nurse Corps of World War II
(Augusta, NJ) Sussex County would like to acknowledge Women in the Military at its 9th Annual Salute to Military Veterans that will take place on Sunday, November 1, 2009, at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Female veterans, women on active duty and members of the US Cadet Nurse Corps are asked to contact the Sussex County Division of Senior Services to identify themselves. “Women in the Military traditionally have not been recognized for their contributions to this Country and the freedom we enjoy today. It is time to acknowledge these dedicated citizens and the sacrifices they have made throughout history,” said Mary Lou Schnurr, Director of Senior Services, on behalf of the Veterans Committee. The United States Cadet Nurse Corps comprised the largest, youngest group of uniformed women to serve their country during WWII and the early postwar years. For several years, this group has sought veteran status but as of this date that goal has not been accomplished.
The 9th Annual Salute to Military Veterans, sponsored by the Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services, and the Veterans Committee will commence with a parade at 2 p.m. that kicks-off with Town Crier Bill Joseph announcing the event and a fly-over of World War II military aircraft. The parade includes veterans of all branches of the service, military vehicles, civic groups and bands. Vehicles will be available for veterans who are unable to march the parade route.
Activities at the reviewing stand will include a Prisoner of War (POW) and Missing in Action (MIA) remembrance and Military Firing Squad. Essay winners and the winner of the veteran pin contest will be announced. After the parade, all participants and spectators are invited to adjourn to the Richards building where they can view military memorabilia and related exhibits. There will also be entertainment, and complimentary refreshments will be served. The Board of Chosen Freeholders will present commemorative pins to all veterans in attendance. A limited supply of engraved beer mugs and commemorative T-shirts will be distributed to Veterans by Krogh’s Restaurant. The public is encouraged to participate in this FREE event honoring all Veterans.
