"Youth in County Government Day"

The Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders hosted its 8th Annual "Youth in County Government Day" on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.  Held in conjunction with "National County Government Week", celebrated this year during the week of April 19 -25, 2009, a combination of 4 junior and senior high school students from each of the County's 10 high schools were invited to participate in the afternoon's activities.

Students arrived at the Administrative Center and were welcomed by the members of the Freeholder Board, with Freeholder Susan Zellman, Liaison to "Youth in County Day", providing a brief synopsis of the afternoon's scheduled activities.

Students were escorted by Freeholder Susan Zellman, Freeholder Jeffrey Parrott, and Freeholder Phillip Crabb on tours of several County Government facilities located in downtown Newton.  Included were the Sheriff's Office, Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility, Division of Social Services, and the Board of Elections, with each area offering a tour of its facility or office, an overview of its functions, and the role it plays in the community.  Upon returning to the Administrative Center, the students were treated to refreshments and allowed time to view the department displays in the main lobby prior to a brief summary of volunteer opportunities in Sussex County and presentations by the Division of Public Works, Division of Engineering, and the Office of Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.), which allowed students the opportunity to participate in a "hands-on" demonstration of the County's G.I.S. program.

This year a total of 24 students, representing Hopatcong High School, Lenape Valley Regional High School, Newton High School, Pope John XXIII Regional High School, Sparta High School, Sussex County Technical School, Vernon High School, and Wallkill Valley Regional High School participated in the annual event.  Each student received a Certificate of Recognition from the Freeholder Board acknowledging their participation in "Youth in County Government Day."
