Release Date: March 08, 2011

Office of Weights and Measures is Here For You

As gas prices continue to soar around the country, residents in Sussex County can rest assured that the Office of Weights and Measures is there to help. Gasoline pumps are one of the many different devices tested by weights and measures officials to assure that consumers get what they pay for and businesses do not give product away as a result of inaccurate equipment. As a part of the Department of Environmental and Public Health Services, the Office continues to monitor gas stations and increase enforcement of consumer protection laws for all twenty-four municipalities throughout the County.

There are steps that consumers can take to help protect themselves while at the pump.

  1. Check roadside sign to make sure the price hasn’t been raised more than once within a 24 hours period.
  2. Compare roadside sign to pump top signs, make sure they match.
  3. Check pump top signs to make sure they accurately match the digital displays.
  4. Check for the seal indicating that the dispensers have been tested by Weights & Measures.
  5. Make sure attendants have reset the pump to zero before filling your tank.
  6. Check your receipt to ensure that it matches the amount charged at the pump.
