Prescription Drug Disposal Day

Each day, 2,500 teens abuse prescription drugs for the first time. Just this past spring, Sussex County 6th-12th graders participated in the Adolescent Alcohol and Drug Survey which revealed that in the last year, 580 Sussex County 9th-12th graders abused painkillers. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates. Are you concerned?

Many teens are turning away from street drugs, but now there is a new threat and kids can access it right from the family medicine cabinet. Parents and caregivers are the first in line of defense in addressing this troubling trend. Teens are accessing these drugs in the comfort of home; it can be as easy as opening a cupboard, drawer, or medicine cabinet. The good news-there are steps you can take to help protect kids from prescription drug abuse: monitor, secure & dispose.

The Sussex County Coalition for Healthy & Safe Families, along with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, the Franklin Police Department and The Drug Enforcement Administration, announce a nationwide prescription drug disposal day, the 2nd one in our county this fall. This initiative seeks to prevent increased pill abuse, theft, and is a safe and responsible way to dispose of unwanted or outdated medications while protecting your family, community and the environment.

Sussex County residents can visit local collection sites on Saturday, November 13th from 10AM-2PM. This service is free and anonymous. Just stop by one of the sites listed below and drop off old, expired, and unused or not needed medications. Thank you for your help in reducing the amount of unused/expired medications in our homes.

  • Newton Wal-Mart, Route 206, Hampton
