Sussex County Prepares for 2017-2018 Winter Season

Preparations are presently underway at the Sussex County Division of Public Works to deal with the snow and ice that is expected in the coming weeks and into the long winter season. Crews are continually checking salt and grit inventories and fine-tuning equipment and vehicles, insuring that they will be ready when the first storm arrives. The 54 men working on these crews realize that most Sussex County residents travel beyond the County to work. County residents depend on the crews to clear approximately 620 lane miles of roadway for them as they exit and enter the County en masse. Many residents leave their homes in the early morning hours and return home late in the evening.

In order to clear these many miles of roadway, Sussex County utilizes its fleet of 67 trucks - 43 single axles, 7 tandems, 17 mason dumps, and 9 loaders. Presently there is an inventory of 12,000 tons of salt and 7,500 tons of a salt/grit mix stored in salt sheds that are strategically placed throughout the County.

Our goal is to keep Sussex County roadways clean and safe for travel, especially under challenging weather conditions. Scott House, Director, Division of Public Works, and his managerial staff keep constant track of the weather and dispatch crews as needed to combat the elements on Sussex County roadways, maintaining a standard of excellence that has become a source of pride not only to Public Works personnel, but also to Sussex County residents.
