Press Release - Plea of Steven Smith

Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced the entry of a guilty plea to an indictment before the Honorable N. Peter Conforti, J.S.C., at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton on October 24, 2017, by Steven Smith.
Smith, age 30 of Wantage, pled guilty to Strict Liability for Drug Induced Death, a first degree crime. Sentencing is presently anticipated for January 12, 2018.
In pleading guilty, the defendant admitted to distributing or dispensing heroin through a co-defendant to an individual in Wantage Township on August 21, 2015, whose death was the result of ingesting the heroin. Smith agrees to be sentenced to six years in New Jersey State Prison subject to the No Early Release Act.
The case was jointly investigated by detectives of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and troopers of the New Jersey State Police.
Smith was represented by Bruce Regenstreich, Esq., and the State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Brent Rafuse.
