Sussex County's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (S.H.I.P.) Earns Performance Award

The Sussex County Department of Human Services (SCDHS) is pleased to announce that the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (S.H.I.P) has received a Performance Award.

S.H.I.P. provides free, objective, confidential assistance to Medicare beneficiaries who have questions about Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans, Medicare Supplement Policies, claims and appeals.

The Administration for Community Living awarded additional funds to those counties who had the highest increase in Medicare beneficiaries served from April 1, 2014 to August 31, 2014, and to those counties who have increased total client contacts more than 20% over the same period in 2013. Sussex County had the highest increase in Medicare beneficiaries served with a 63% increase in performance over 2013; ranking first in the State of New Jersey. The resulting Performance Award of $11,000 to Sussex County S.H.I.P. will enable these services to continue to grow.

"Donna Green our coordinator and the volunteers who serve as S.H.I.P. counselors perform a great service to Sussex County citizens. In this difficult to navigate world of Medicare, Donna and her team helps Medicare beneficiaries better understand their healthcare choices and assists them in enrolling in a program that best fits their needs," said Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator for the Department of Human Services.

Sussex County S.H.I.P. offers services at the Division of Senior Services, Vernon Senior Center, Hopatcong Senior Center, Franklin Senior Center, and at Knoll Heights Village in Sparta. S.H.I.P. will also be offering assistance throughout Sussex County during the Annual Open Enrollment Period (October 15, 2014 to December 7, 2014) to assist Medicare beneficiaries in choosing prescription drug plans for 2015.
