Seniors "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right" Throughout Sussex County

The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services offers the opportunity for senior citizens to "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right" five days a week at four locations in Sussex County.

The Congregate Nutrition Program, established in Sussex County in 1973, is available to individuals age 60 or over and provides meals that meet the one-third Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which is established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Nutritious meals are provided at Sussex County's four senior nutrition sites - Vernon Senior Center, Franklin Senior Center, Hopatcong Senior Center and Newton Senior Center at Liberty Towers - Monday through Friday. Besides a warm healthy meal, Sussex County Division of Senior Services also offers various health and wellness programs at each site for participants to join.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has designated March 2014 as National Nutrition Month®. National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign that focuses on making healthy eating choices and encourages physical activity to promote a healthy lifestyle. "Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right" is the theme chosen for this year's campaign. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, "Consumer research confirms that taste tops nutrition as the main reason why one food is purchased over another. While social, emotional and health factors also play a role, the foods people enjoy are likely the ones they eat the most."

Since November of 2012 Newton Medical Center has been the provider of the meals for the County. The dietary staff at Newton Medical Center carefully implements a menu that takes into consideration the nutritional needs of the participants with a meal that more than satisfies the participants' taste buds. Individuals participating in the program have expressed their increased satisfaction over the meals being offered. The Congregate Nutrition Program saw an increase in the number of participants and the number of meals being served in 2013 when compared to 2012. The Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services attributes this increase in part to the quality of meals being provided by Newton Medical Center.

In recognition of National Nutrition Month®, the Sussex County Division of Senior Services is encouraging individuals to attend an informative and educational program, "Serving Up Good Nutrition," being offered at the four nutrition sites:
