Project Community Connect a Huge Success in Sussex County

There were over 180 Sussex County residents who participated in the first Project Community Connect event on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. The event was held at two locations, concurrently: Manna House, 54 High Street, Newton, NJ and Harvest House, 1 Hamburg Avenue, Sussex, NJ. There were two sessions at each location for residents to receive assistance. Lunch was made available at the first session, which was held at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and at the second session, which ran from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., dinner was provided.

To assist each participant in navigating the Project Community Connect event, a map was given of all available services. Information was provided and knowledgeable staff was readily available to answer questions and provide assistance on housing, social service benefits, utility assistance, legal services, substance abuse, mental health, medical services, communication, transportation, employment in addition to other related information. Free haircuts, flu shots, medical and dental screenings, food bags and personal hygiene items were also offered, as well as the chance to win one of fifteen gifts donated by local businesses and community members. A human services resource guide, compiled of 50 agencies, was given to each participant for their personal use. The guide will serve as a tool to assist them in accessing needed services in Sussex County.

Out of the 180 completed evaluations that were collected from both sites, 94% of participants received information on needed services, and 98% indicated that the services and information provided were helpful. Some of the top needs indicated were: healthcare, including dental care and mental health, housing, utility assistance, transportation and childcare.
