"Keeping Your Mind Sharp" FREE Memory Screenings

(Newton, NJ) - The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services and Newton Medical Center will observe National Memory Screening Day, Wednesday, November 16, 2011, by offering seniors a one hour educational program, "Keeping Your Mind Sharp," in conjunction with FREE Memory Screenings performed by a qualified healthcare professional. The event will take place at the Dorothy E. Henry Memorial Library, which is located at 66 Route 94, Vernon, NJ. Memory screenings will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. "Keeping Your Mind Sharp" will be presented at 11:30 a.m. for the convenience of those who would like to attend before or after their memory screenings.

An initiative of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), National Memory Screening Day is designed to promote detection of memory problems and provide education about successful aging. The face-to-face, noninvasive screening takes only about five to ten minutes and consists of a series of questions and tasks.

AFA encourages screenings for adults who have memory concerns, a family history of Alzheimer's disease or who want to check their memory now to have the results available for future comparison. The results do not represent a diagnosis, and AFA advises those individuals who score poorly or who have normal scores but are still concerned to follow-up with their physician or another qualified healthcare professional. Results of the Memory Screening are strictly confidential.

To schedule a Memory Screening or register to attend the "Keeping your Mind Sharp" presentation, contact the Sussex County Division of Senior Services by phone at 973-579-0555 ext. 1221, by fax at 973-579-0550 or by email: seniorservices@sussex.nj.us.
