Four County Health Departments Plan Regional Emergency Preparedness Exercise

The Sussex County Department of Environmental and Public Health Services is one of the four New Jersey Northwest Region health departments conducting an emergency preparedness exercise on Saturday, May 14, at Craigmeur Recreation Complex located on Green Pond Road in Rockaway Township from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The exercise is a collaborative effort involving the Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren County health departments. Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and Community Emergency Response (CERT) volunteers, in conjunction with emergency response staff from each county, will participate to set up mass vaccination and mass antibiotic distribution clinics. The exercise scenario involves a hurricane, influenza and a bioterrorist event.

Herb Yardley, Administrator and Health Officer of the Department of Environmental and Public Health Services stated, "The goal of this exercise is to develop the capacity to respond to public health emergencies as a region, share resources, and to enhance existing emergency preparedness plans. We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the other Counties within the Northwest Region."

The Northwest Region County health departments have collaborated on various public health events, although this will be the first time that the region will work together to participate in a full-scale exercise demonstrating the ability to open mass clinics.

For more information regarding the exercise, please contact the Sussex County Department of Environmental and Public Health Services, at 973-579-0370, ext. 1233.
