The Sussex County Division of Senior Services has forged a partnership with Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ, in order to expand its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Students who volunteer to be VITA Counselors will earn two internship credits for their time spent preparing basic State and Federal Income Tax forms, Property Tax Rebates and Earned Income Tax Credit applications. This collaboration is spearheaded by Diane Friedberg, Program Development Specialist with the Division of Senior Services and Coordinator of the VITA program, and Assistant Professor of Business, James Ford, of Centenary College. An initial meeting with 26 students detailed the internship requirements and provided a general overview of the VITA Program.
The VITA Program is designed to assist individuals, regardless of age, who meet the income requirement of $50,000 or less. Counselors will be available at multiple sites throughout the County from February 8 through April 15, 2010. Some locations will have the capability for Electronic (E) Filing. All VITA Counselors receive FREE training by an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Representative and a Certified Public Accountant. Mandatory VITA Program training will take place on Thursday, January 14, 2010, from 3 p.m. -7 p.m., and on Saturday, January 16, 2010, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Sparta Senior Center. Potential Counselors must attend both days of training. A two-day E-Filing training will take place on Thursday, January 21 and Friday, January 22, 2010, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Sussex County Administration Building, third floor conference room.
