Skylands Ride Participates in the 29th Annual New Jersey Paratransit Roadeo

[Newton, NJ] Drivers from community transit systems and Access Link from across the state participated in the 29th Annual New Jersey Paratransit Roadeo which was held on May 11, 2013, at Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. The event is sponsored by the Council on Special Transportation and New Jersey Transit's Office of Local Programs Support. The Paratransit Roadeo allows drivers from around the state to compete against one another based upon their driving skills. Drivers are scored on their ability to maneuver their vehicles in an obstacle course designed to represent everyday driving patterns. Drivers are also scored on a written test, client sensitivity, wheel chair securement and bus preparation.

First and second place were won by drivers of Cape May Fare Free and third place was won by Middlesex County Transit. Cape May has a Roadeo course set up on site at their bus yard and they practice year round. Skylands Ride Omnibus Operators Carrie Heiney, Marie Zangara, Kathleen Hayde and Doug Maull represented Sussex County during this year's competition. Omnibus Operator Doug Maull has participated in the NJ State Roadeo for the past three years representing Sussex County Skylands Ride. He placed number seven this year and in the top ten drivers all three years. Carrie Heiney, Marie Zangara and Kathleen Hayde participated for the first time this year and displayed competency and professionalism in their trade. All Skylands Ride drivers demonstrated excellent mastery of Omnibus Operations and customer service, which is representative of the services provided to Sussex County residents by Skylands Ride's top notch staff. Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator for the Sussex County Department of Human Services said, "We know in Sussex County the Skylands Ride team excels each day. Participation in this event demonstrates the commitment of our team to service excellence. Competition among all of these great programs leads to improved skill and service, which results in exceptional service for our citizens."
