WNNJ, WSUS and Quick Chek Join to Stuff the Bus Against Hunger

WNNJ and WSUS will host the fifth annual Stuff the Bus campaign against hunger in Sussex County on the 19th and 20th of November.  Two local residents, Danielle Hodgman and Debra Jordan, actually began their “Stuff the Bus” collection in October in anticipation of this event.  They went trick or treating with a purpose on Halloween and collected over 1,000 pounds of food in lieu of candy.  We have been blessed with a community that lends their time, gifts and talents to help feed their neighbors in need.  Stuff the Bus arrives at a crucial moment this year to aid many residents struggling to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Sussex County residents can immediately begin dropping off non-perishable food items at any Quick Chek location in Sussex County during their hours of operation, including the new Jefferson location, to replenish the food pantry shelves at the Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services.  Donations can also be dropped off at the following local businesses:  CKO of Augusta, CKO of Franklin, Compassionate Care, Country Dollar Plus, FSAM, Garden of Life, Hamburg Plumbing Supply, Highlands Self Storage, Living Pawsitively, Subaru World of Newton, Sussex County Chamber, Toyota World of Newton and Lowes in Newton.

WNNJ and WSUS personalities will be on the air at the locations listed below, when Sussex County Skylands Ride will have buses available, so people will be able to “stuff the bus” to help provide food for Sussex County residents in need of assistance.  Quick Chek will also be providing a free cup of coffee to each person who makes a donation.

Over the past four years, WNNJ, WSUS and Quick Chek have teamed up during Thanksgiving week to raise over 71,827 pounds of food and $8,344.00 in monetary donations, in addition to educating people in Sussex County about the issues of hunger in their own communities.

A host of generous donors including businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals ranging from very young children to those ninety years young have braved the cold for four years in a row to help their fellow neighbors.    Even long term care residents of the Sussex County Homestead and Bentley Assisted Living facilities, some having to use wheelchairs, walkers or canes, personally visited the Lafayette Quick Chek to make their donations.

The Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services, WNNJ, WSUS, and Quick Chek would like to thank our generous community in advance for their continued support and would like to wish everyone a blessed holiday season.
