"Keeping Your Mind Sharp" FREE Memory Screenings

(Newton, NJ) - The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services and Newton Medical Center will offer seniors Memory Screenings and a one hour educational program, "Keeping Your Mind Sharp," Friday, July 13, 2012. The FREE Memory Screening will be performed by a qualified healthcare professional. The event will take place at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, which is located at Route 206 North, Montague, NJ. Memory screenings will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. "Keeping Your Mind Sharp" will be presented at 1:15 p.m. for the convenience of those who would like to attend before or after their memory screenings.

An initiative of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), the Memory Screening is designed to promote detection of memory problems and provide education about successful aging. The face-to-face, noninvasive screening takes only about five to ten minutes and consists of a series of questions and tasks.

AFA encourages screenings for adults who have memory concerns, a family history of Alzheimer's disease or who want to check their memory now to have the results available for future comparison. The results do not represent a diagnosis, and AFA advises those individuals who score poorly or who have normal scores but are still concerned to follow-up with their physician or another qualified healthcare professional. Results of the Memory Screening are strictly confidential.

To schedule a Memory Screening or register to attend the "Keeping your Mind Sharp" presentation, contact the Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services by phone at 973-579-0555 ext. 1221, or by email: seniorservices@sussex.nj.us.
