Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders to Host
"2011 Youth in County Government Day"
The Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders will host its 10th Annual "Youth in County Government Day" on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Held in conjunction with "National County Government Month", as designated by the National Association of Counties (NACO) and celebrated during the month of April, a combination of four junior and senior high school students from each of the County's ten high schools are invited to participate in tours of various County Government Offices.
Students will arrive at the Administrative Center and be welcomed by members of the Freeholder Board prior to embarking on the tours.
To coincide with NACO's theme for this year's "National County Government Month" of "Serving our Veterans, Armed Forces and Their Families", a visit will be made to the Veterans Memorial and Memorial Gardens located on the Newton Green. As in previous years, the students will participate in tours of the Sheriff's Office and the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility. Board of Elections' staff will provide an overview of the election process and discuss how members of the armed forces, both on American and foreign soils, are afforded the opportunity to cast their votes. The Division of Social Services will round out the day's tours with a discussion of how it assists Sussex County residents in need and the role it plays in the local community. Students will also visit the Social Services Food Pantry. This past year, through the "Champions for Charity Food Drive" events hosted by all County high schools, students have played an important role in helping to fill the shelves at the Food Pantry with the essential food and personal items needed by those Sussex County residents experiencing difficult times.
After refreshments at the Administrative Center, a presentation will be made to the students by staff of the Sussex County Department of Environmental and Public Health Services entitled, "Cancer, Nutrition, and You".
Each student will be presented with a Certificate of Recognition from the Freeholder Board acknowledging their participation in "Youth in County Government Day 2011."
