March is Red Cross Month

Ninety-four years and counting - that's how long the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been serving the local area; responding to disasters, aiding our military personnel, teaching life-saving skills, and conducting the blood drives that supply the sustenance that only a human life can provide. The American Red Cross is not a government agency, nor is it funded through government dollars. Its existence depends solely on the generosity of others and fundraising events conducted throughout the year. Volunteers play a huge role in the day-to-day operations, responding to emergencies, giving aid to those in immediate need, and conducting classes to train those who desire to become a part of the Red Cross volunteer team.

In recognition of the Red Cross and the 130 years since Clara Barton created the organization in 1881, the month of March is designated as "March is Red Cross Month". In support of "March is Red Cross Month", and to acknowledge those Red Cross volunteers who donate their time and talents to the local Sussex County community, the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, at its February 23, 2011 meeting, presented a Proclamation from the Freeholder Board to Patricia S. Day, Executive Director of the Sussex County Chapter. A Red Cross flag will also be flown in the Newton Green during the month of March in honor of "March is Red Cross Month"

The American Red Cross, Sussex County Chapter, offers a variety of opportunities for anyone wishing to volunteer their time. Opportunities range from office assistance to volunteer instructors to becoming a member of a Disaster Action Team. Those interested in exploring volunteer opportunities should contact the Sussex County Chapter at 973.579.1600.
