Sparta High School Students Kick Off 2010 Champions for Charity
Release Date: November 03, 2010

Sussex County High Schools are once again collecting food in the fight against hunger in Sussex County.

Sussex County High Schools have re-upped for the 2010-2011 Champions for Charity fight against hunger food drive campaign. Last year, students from all ten high schools in the County collected a whopping 95,520 pounds of food to help keep the Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services food pantry stocked. This year the program is expecting to collect over 100,000 pounds of food.

Sparta High School kicked-off this year’s Champions for Charity on the 2nd of November, raising 11,460 pounds of food. Courtney Noone, Vice President of the National Honor Society, led the Honor Society in involving the entire school in the food drive. The Life Skills Class made signs and posters and counted the donations of food. Pat Flynn of Sodexo, a food service company, donated hundreds of cookies to give out in exchange for donations. Sparta Middle School also collected donations to help with the effort.

Senator Steven Oroho, Freeholder Director Jeff Parrott, and Freeholders Phillip Crabb and Richard Zeoli were on hand to help the students stuff the bus. Sparta High School won the 2009-2010 award for collecting the most food, with a total of 19,930 pounds.

Champions for Charity is the brainchild of Freeholder Director Jeff Parrott, who was looking for a way to provide food for the County’s neediest residents throughout the entire year and not just around the holidays, which is when many food drives take place. Working with area high schools, the Champions for Charity program was implemented in 2009 and proved to be a tremendous success. Students have competed on the sports field and now they have a venue to compete in charitable activities.

Last year, students got very creative in trying to find ways to encourage each other to collect the most food, from awarding of homework points, to pie throwing, buzz cuts for teachers and free admission to sporting events with a food item.

Freeholder Director Jeff Parrott and his wife, Lisa, donated a trophy and plaque dedicated to Champions for Charity. The plaque was unveiled at a Sparta Board of Education meeting and is now proudly hung outside the Freeholders’ office in the Sussex County Administrative Center. A plate engraved with the name of the school that collects the most food during each school year will be added to the plaque annually. Sparta High School is engraved on the first plate for the 2009-2010 school year. The trophy is proudly displayed at Sparta High School.

As the Champions for Charity Program begins its second year, Freeholder Director Jeff Parrott stated, “Once again this year, the people of Sussex County are ready to step up to the plate. They recognize that times are still tough for a lot of people in the County and are willing to come forward to help. That is what makes this County the greatest in the State.”
