The Sussex County Education Partnership

The mission of the Sussex County Youth Services Commission Education Partnership is to develop, promote, and enhance collaborative efforts between the schools, the system partners in the child behavioral health system of care, the Division of Youth and Family Services, and other community based agencies to improve the well-being of children in Sussex County. Through this Partnership, professionals will provide up-to-date, ongoing training and education on the services that are available and how to access and effectively coordinate with those services. This will help ensure that children receive the assistance that they need, helping to achieve the goals of keeping children at home, in school, and out of trouble.

When the Sussex County Education Partnership was originally developed, the Planning Committee would create a training based on identifying needs by surveying the schools. The trainings were set up in the community, and the schools were asked to send a representative that could get the information and bring it back to their specific school or school district. This concept was originally successful, however, the schools started to feel the restrictions based on budgetary factors. The Education Partnership Planning Committee realized that they would have to change their approach to trainings, due to these new restrictions, and would have to become mobile in order to meet their mission.

The Education Partnership Planning Committee developed a new mobile team approach to trainings. This approach was to bring the professionals to the schools. The Partnership is asking for the schools to give them the issue or concern, and the Partnership will create a specialized team from their extensive group of community based professionals. Utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach to problem solving, the community based providers and the school personnel work through the problem and create an action plan as a team. The action plan includes detailed information on the supports needed to address the situation and how to access those supports. The idea is simple; give the Education Partnership a challenging situation, a team will be assembled, go to the school, and create a plan…keeping kids at home, in school, and out of trouble. All the agencies involved volunteer their services for the training; therefore, their services are free of charge.

The Partnership is coordinated through the Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Community and Youth Services.
