October is Fire Prevention Month
With autumn upon us, the Fire Departments of Sussex County would like to remind our residents and visitors to check the following items in and around your homes and businesses:
- The fire season is not over. Please be certain your roof is free of leaves and pine needles. It is also advisable to maintain a minimum of 30 feet between your house and the closest tree.
- Prior to needing to use it, clean your chimney to be sure there is no soot build-up. Do not burn green wood in your woodstove - this contributes to clogging those pipes and chimneys very rapidly with creosote build-up! Always make sure your wood is well-seasoned prior to burning.
- When it is time to turn those clocks again, replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check them for proper operation. Always remember to have smoke detectors placed near all sleeping areas of your home. Properly operating smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors save lives!
- Space heaters need space, too. Remember to leave a minimum of 3 feet of space around your heater. And always remember to unplug it when not in use.

Keep these few items in mind and do your part to Stay Safe.
