Sussex County Cancer Coalition Sponsors Oral Cancer Screening

The Sussex County Cancer Coalition sponsored an Oral Cancer Screening at the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show on August 12, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free screening was held in the Saint Clare's Health System tent where twenty-seven community members were screened by orthodontist, Dr. Robert V. Fiore, DMD, who volunteered his time for the Cancer Coalition.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year, more than 30,000 new cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx are diagnosed and over 8,000 deaths due to oral cancer occur. This type of cancer includes cancer of the lip, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, gingiva and alveolar mucosa, buccal mucosa, and oropharynx.

Tobacco and alcohol use are the primary risk factors contributing to oral and oropharyngeal cancer. Other related causes contributing to this type of cancer have been linked to poor diet, poor oral hygiene, iron deficiency and a number of viruses, such as Human papillomavirus (HPV). Occupational exposures have also been associated with causing oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Exposure to asbestos, overexposure to UV rays from sun, and ingestion of industrial hazards are among some of the suspected sources.

Oral cancer can be detected at an early stage through routine examination by dentists and primary care physicians, as stated by the New Jersey Department of Senior Services Office of Cancer Control and Prevention. Other steps you can take to help prevent oral cancer or to prevent its progression include:

  • Avoid/limit the use of tobacco and alcohol
  • See your dentist and ask for an oral cancer screening
  • Use well-fitting dentures that fit properly and are clean to avoid oral irritation
  • Don't chew on the inside of your mouth because it irritates your oral tissues
  • Limit exposure to the sun because UV light damages the skin on your lips
